Last night I realized Tom Petty’s “Don’t Come Around Here No More” is a great song, but in its original form it seems too bizarre to work. Tom’s voice is perfect on it, but singing over a really 80s sounding sitar/beat combo there’s barely any emotion left. So I feel like someone should cover it. And this is not how it should be done.
I also found a live video of Vampire Weekend covering it, and they do a pretty good job. But they stick to the song, sitar simulation and all. What I’m thinking here is a reimagination where, if the song was aimed at you, you really wouldn’t come around there no more.
I guess what I’m saying is if I’m dedicated to this idea, maybe you’ll see a cover of the song in the nearish future. But if I’m not, then I just want you to listen to the original and think about how in some ways it’s really good.
I’ll be joining for this wonderful event. Check out the flyer and the event, then come to Milford Wednesday night!
I think that super intimate shows shouldn’t always be confined to houses and small bars, so I’m trying to put on something a little bit different this Wednesday. There will be four acts playing in this little area between a bank and a toy shop in Downtown Milford (pictured above). We’ll all be playing acoustic and without mics. I think it’ll be fun, and I also think it will be more fun if you come and bring a friend.
The names were changed, and the window frames were in the wrong place.
You should all be listening to Paulson.

The recent increase in local music collectives is pretty sweet. This NPR feature explores the topic, with input from Lansing-based Bigger Brush Media.
A while ago, Ben told me I should listen to David Bazan’s “Curse Your Branches” because it was a big influence as he was doing preproduction/writing for the new DSF album. I listened then, and am listening again now, and I really couldn’t be more excited for my own future album.
that song pretty much describes my life right now and having lyrics to read over would be nice as i listen to Summer night, Winter night.
but if not, i understand.
Absolutely! Here they are:
This is the last, this is the last
I can’t take the sad, I can’t take the sadness
I can’t take these thoughts, I can’t take these thoughts
This distance has got to stop
This distance has got to stop
And it’s days like this where I feel like anything I do can’t help you through this life
And it’s days like this where I wait for your call, for you to tell me you’ve found someone else
Someone better than me who can cheer you up on those sad nights where I only stay silent
But it’s nights like this where I write songs like these and I’m thankful just because you love me
So at least I have that
You were the first, you know you’re the first
But I won’t find, I know I won’t find
Anyone better, anyone close to you
This distance has got to stop
This distance has got to stop
And it’s days like this where I feel like anything I do can’t help you through this life
And it’s days like this where I wait for your call, for you to tell me you’ve found someone else
Someone better than me who can cheer you up on those sad nights where I only stay silent
But it’s nights like this where I write songs like these and I’m thankful just because you love me
So at least I have that
And at least you have my love back
